L’Escaut est un lieu fondé en 1989 par Micheline Hardy, comédienne, metteure en scène et scénariste, et Olivier Bastin, architecte et scénographe. Outre une coopérative d’architectes, il accueille des résidences d’artistes d’arts plastiques et vivants, comme un laboratoire permanent pour questionner l’architecture : serait-elle un art ? Comment les arts plastiques et arts vivants nourrissent-ils l’architecture ? Rapports à l’espace, à la forme, à la lumière, aux tensions entre ses matières et les êtres qui les habitent.
Situé à Molenbeek, dans une ancienne messagerie internationale construite en 1913, il s’imprègne de la vie du Quartier Maritime, à Molenbeek, en marge du canal et du site de Tour et Taxis.
Intra-muros, se vit au quotidien le croisement des pratiques et vécus des créateurs, architectes, artistes, techniciens et techniciennes du spectacle…
Extra-muros se multiplient les échanges avec les voisins, acteurs du quartier, associations, en prenant part aux événements, festivals ou encore foires internationales, auxquelles L’Escaut participe le plus souvent en Off.
Plusieurs artistes résidents à L’Escaut, ont aujourd’hui une renommée internationale, que ce soit en arts plastiques ou en arts vivants.

Aujourd’hui, L’Escaut veut soutenir les artistes au-delà de ses murs.
Par l’édition, L’Escaut veut partager le sens de la recherche et transformer de nouveaux territoires en laboratoire étendu, nourri du regard des artistes, sur l’espace, la nature, la ville, l’architecture…
Première édition en 30 exemplaires, l’ouvrage initié par Adèle Gratacos, questionnait l’architecture comme un espace « habité » au sens où l’on dit d’une personne, qu’elle est « habitée ».
Pour cette seconde édition, L’Escaut se réjouit d’accompagner Denis Pondruel dans un processus itératif et récurrent de publications qui prendront appuis sur ces créations depuis le début de son Œuvre, comme autant de jalons pour une manière de voir, de dire, de comprendre les choses et le monde qu’elles habitent aujourd’hui.
Avec l’humour et le sérieux qui caractérisent sa pratique, Denis Pondruel actionnera les manettes de ses mécaniques mentales pour le plaisir des yeux et des neurones.

L’Escaut is een centrum, in 1989 opgericht door Micheline Hardy, actrice, regisseur en scenarioschrijver, en Olivier Bastin, architect en scenograaf. Naast een architecten coöperatieve biedt het onderdak aan beeldende en podiumkunstenaars, als een permanent laboratorium om architectuur te bevragen: is deze een kunstvorm? Hoe voeden beeldende en podiumkunsten de architectuur? Relaties met ruimte, vorm, licht, spanningen tussen materialen en de mensen die er wonen.
Het centrum is gevestigd in Molenbeek, in een voormalig internationaal koeriersbedrijf uit 1913, en ademt het leven van de Maritieme wijk in Molenbeek, aan de rand van het kanaal en het terrein van Tour & Taxis.
Binnen de muren vindt dagelijks een kruisbestuiving plaats tussen de praktijken en ervaringen van ontwerpers, architecten, kunstenaars, technici uit de theaterwereld...
Buiten de muren worden de contacten met de buren, actoren uit de wijk en verenigingen steeds intensiever, door deel te nemen aan evenementen, festivals of zelfs internationale beurzen, waaraan L'Escaut meestal buiten het officiële programma om deelneemt.
Verschillende kunstenaars die in L'Escaut gewonde, genieten vandaag van internationale bekendheid, zowel op het gebied van beeldende kunst als podiumkunsten.

Vandaag wil L'Escaut kunstenaars ook buiten zijn muren ondersteunen.
Via publicaties wil L'Escaut de betekenis van onderzoek delen en nieuwe gebieden omvormen tot een uitgebreid laboratorium, gevoed door de blik van kunstenaars op ruimte, natuur, stad, architectuur ...
De eerste uitgave, in een oplage van 30 exemplaren, was een initiatief van Adèle Gratacos die stelde architectuur voor als een ‘bewoonde’ ruimte, in de zin dat we van een persoon zeggen dat hij of zij ‘bewoond’ is.
Voor deze tweede editie verheugt L'Escaut zich erop Denis Pondruel te begeleiden in een iteratief en terugkerend proces van publicaties die zullen voortbouwen op zijn creaties sinds het begin van zijn Oeuvre, als mijlpalen voor een manier van kijken, spreken en begrijpen van de dingen en de wereld waarin ze vandaag de dag leven.
Met de humor en ernst die kenmerkend zijn voor zijn praktijk, zal Denis Pondruel de hendels van zijn mentale mechanismen bedienen voor het plezier van het oog en de hersenen.

L’Escaut is a venue founded in 1989 by Micheline Hardy, actress, director, and screenwriter, and Olivier Bastin, architect and set designer. In addition to being an architects' cooperative, it hosts residencies for visual and performing artists, serving as a permanent laboratory for questioning architecture: is this an art form? How do the visual and performing arts influence architecture? Relationships with space, form, light, and the tensions between materials and the people who inhabit them.
Located in Molenbeek, in a former international courier service built in 1913, it is steeped in the life of the Maritime Area in Molenbeek, on the edge of the canal and the Tour & Taxis site.
Within its walls, the daily life of creators, architects, artists, and technicians from the performing arts intersects with their practices and experiences.
Outside the walls, exchanges with neighbors, local actors, and associations are multiplying, with participation in events, festivals, and international fairs, in which L'Escaut most often participates as an off-site venue.
Several artists in residence at L'Escaut are now internationally renowned, whether in the visual or performing arts.

Today, L’Escaut wants to support artists beyond its walls.
Through publishing, L’Escaut wants to share the meaning of research and transform new territories into an extended laboratory, nourished by artists’ perspectives on space, nature, the city, architecture, and more.

For this second edition, L'Escaut is delighted to accompany Denis Pondruel in an iterative and recurring process of publications that will draw on his creations since the beginning of his work, as milestones for a way of seeing, saying, and understanding things and the world they inhabit today.
With the humor and seriousness that characterize his practice, Denis Pondruel will activate the levers of his mental mechanics for the pleasure of the eyes and the neurons.
