From Movement to Melody

From Movement to Melody est un projet de recherche artistique à la croisée de la danse contemporaine, de l’intelligence artificielle (IA) et du design computationnel. Ce solo dansé propose une expérience immersive où chaque geste du danseur devient le moteur d’un dialogue en temps réel entre mouvement, musique, lumière et image. L’ambition ? Créer une scène vivante, sensible, qui réagit aux mouvements autant qu’elle les influence, pour offrir à chaque représentation une trajectoire unique.

Au cœur du dispositif, une intelligence artificielle développée en Python analyse en direct les mouvements du danseur, les réactions du public ou encore les données captées par des caméras et capteurs. Grâce à des outils comme MediaPipe, YOLO ou encore un modèle de réseau neuronal sur mesure, ces informations sont traduites en sons, effets visuels ou ambiances lumineuses. La scène devient alors un organisme sensible où tout interagit — jusqu’au costume du danseur, pensé lui aussi comme une interface technologique.

Ce costume n’est pas un simple accessoire : il est conçu comme un objet interactif, capable d’influencer et de répondre au mouvement. Conçu à partir de techniques de fabrication avancées et de design génératif (notamment avec Rhino et Grasshopper), il est à la fois une contrainte physique, un amplificateur de geste, et un symbole : prothèse futuriste ou entité autonome, selon l’imaginaire du spectateur.

La performance s’inscrit ainsi dans un système de boucles d’influences : le mouvement génère du son, le son transforme le mouvement, la lumière modifie le costume, le costume agit sur la danse... Grâce à l’IA, ces interactions évoluent en permanence, rendant chaque représentation imprévisible et singulière.

Plus qu’un spectacle, From Movement to Melody est une réflexion vivante sur la place des technologies dans l’acte artistique. Qui contrôle quoi ? L’humain maîtrise-t-il encore la machine, ou se laisse-t-il transformer par elle ? Entre harmonie et tension, ce projet interroge le futur de la création à l’ère des intelligences artificielles.

From Movement to Melody is an artistic research project at the crossroads of contemporary dance, artificial intelligence (AI) and computational design. This solo dance work offers an immersive experience in which each of the dancer's gestures becomes the driving force behind a real-time dialogue between movement, music, light and image. The ambition? To create a living, sensitive stage that reacts to movements as much as it influences them, offering each performance a unique trajectory.
At the heart of the system, an artificial intelligence developed in Python analyses the dancer's movements, the audience's reactions and the data captured by cameras and sensors. Using tools such as MediaPipe, YOLO and a custom neural network model, this information is translated into sound, visual effects and lighting ambience. The stage then becomes a sensitive organism where everything interacts - right down to the dancer's costume, which is also designed as a technological interface.
The costume is more than a simple accessory: it is designed as an interactive object, capable of influencing and responding to movement. Designed using advanced manufacturing techniques and generative design (notably Rhino and Grasshopper), it is at once a physical constraint, a gesture amplifier and a symbol: a futuristic prosthesis or an autonomous entity, depending on the spectator's imagination.
 
The performance is part of a system of influence loops: the movement generates sound, the sound transforms the movement, the light modifies the costume, the costume affects the dance... Thanks to AI, these interactions are constantly evolving, making each performance unpredictable and unique.
More than just a show, From Movement to Melody is a lively reflection on the place of technology in the artistic act. Who controls what? Do humans still control machines, or do they allow themselves to be transformed by them? Between harmony and tension, this project questions the future of creation in the age of artificial intelligence.
