The RED BOX 

The Red Box is a project bringing interior and urban spaces to life with a combination of installation, costume design and performance.
In its first iteration, at L’Escaut, the project will explore the artistic interests of Jan van Schaik and Olivia Lennon, combined with found and curated material created through an international cultural collaboration.
They will integrate submissions from citizens of local and global community of peers into the sets, costumes, and scripts towards an experimental performance in L’Escaut project space.
Their project will transport us from the everyday life into a lucid dream world, and then back again – like a contemporary hybrid of Sisyphus’s stone and Cocteau's mirror.

The RED BOX

Created in response to a residency at the L’Escaut project space in Brussels, The Red Box is a collaborative work by Olivia Lennon and Jan van Schaik. 
The work understands the space as a found object. A found object that has architectural, social, cultural and political qualities. And treats these found qualities as building blocks on which to expand the material philosophies of their practice.
There is a process to this philosophical expansion. It is a form of thinking that requires time and space to play with, rearrange, and reconsider the building blocks. And it is a form of thinking that requires empathy, observation, and the production of work in iterative form. 
The recording of this process  is the primary output of the work – like a black box flight recorder. And it is from the concept that the project gets its name: The Red Box.
 
The process revolves around an act. The act will have a set. It will have actors who will become characters through scripted words, sounds, choreography, props, and costume.
In addition to the actors, the current members of L’Escaut will also be invited to participate in a form consistent with how they already interact with the studio. Forms such as film, architecture, performance, and the culinary arts. And in other ways as yet unknown.
This act will have an audience, who will be embedded in the space of the performance.
And the act will also involve participants from around the globe who will interact with it via fax, email, morse-code, and screen.
The Red Box will document the planning of the act, the writing of the script, the invention of the characters, the design of their costumes, and the details of their props. The Red Box will record the creation of drawings, images, models, and lighting diagrams of the set design. And it will keep a choreographic score of the movement of its agents and actors.
On Sunday 28 April , an audience will be invited to a private viewing of a full dress rehearsal of the act. This dress rehearsal is titled: Act One. Attending this dress rehearsal represents a rare opportunity to experience a conceptual artwork in the making. 
To provide broader context to the performers, participants, and the audience of Act One, an exhibition of what has been recorded by The Red Box thus far will be exhibited simultaneously.
After 28 April, and back in Melbourne, the artists will continue to contribute to the work via the remote means for interaction set up by them during their residency. At the same time, they will collate the contents of The Red Box and configure it into a form suitable for archiving, exhibition,  and publishing

The RED BOX

The Red Box est un projet qui donne vie à des espaces intérieurs et urbains grâce à une combinaison d'installations, de costumes et de performances.
Dans sa première itération, à L'Escaut, le projet explorera les intérêts artistiques de Jan van Schaik et d'Olivia Lennon, combinés à des matériaux trouvés et créés dans le cadre d'une collaboration culturelle internationale.
Ils intégreront les propositions des citoyens de la communauté locale et mondiale de pairs dans les décors, les costumes et les scénarios d'une performance expérimentale dans l'espace de projet de L'Escaut.
Leur projet nous transportera de la vie quotidienne vers un monde de rêve lucide, puis de nouveau vers l'arrière - comme un hybride contemporain de la pierre de Sisyphe et du miroir de Cocteau.

 

Créée en réponse à une résidence à l'espace de projet L'Escaut à Bruxelles, The Red Box est une œuvre collaborative d'Olivia Lennon et de Jan van Schaik. 
L'œuvre considère l'espace comme un objet trouvé. Un objet trouvé qui possède des qualités architecturales, sociales, culturelles et politiques. Et traite ces qualités trouvées comme des blocs de construction à partir desquels ils développent les philosophies matérielles de leur pratique.
Cette expansion philosophique s'accompagne d'un processus. C'est une forme de pensée qui nécessite du temps et de l'espace pour jouer avec les éléments de construction, les réarranger et les reconsidérer. C'est une forme de pensée qui nécessite de l'empathie, de l'observation et la production d'un travail sous forme itérative. 
L'enregistrement de ce processus est le principal résultat du travail - comme une boîte noire d'enregistrement de vol. C'est d'ailleurs de ce concept que le projet tire son nom : The Red Box.
Le processus s'articule autour d'un acte. L'acte aura un décor. Il y aura des acteurs qui deviendront des personnages grâce à des mots, des sons, des chorégraphies, des accessoires et des costumes.
 
Outre les acteurs, les membres actuels de L'Escaut seront également invités à participer sous une forme cohérente avec la manière dont ils interagissent déjà avec le studio. Des formes telles que le cinéma, l'architecture, la performance et les arts culinaires. Et sous d'autres formes encore inconnues.
Cet acte aura un public, qui sera intégré dans l'espace de la performance.
Il impliquera également des participants du monde entier qui interagiront avec lui par télécopie, courrier électronique, code morse et écran.
La boîte rouge documentera la planification de l'acte, l'écriture du scénario, l'invention des personnages, la conception de leurs costumes et les détails de leurs accessoires. La boîte rouge enregistrera la création de dessins, d'images, de modèles et de diagrammes d'éclairage de la scénographie. Et elle conservera une partition chorégraphique des mouvements de ses agents et de ses acteurs.
Le dimanche 28 avril, un public constitué de membres de la communauté artistique bruxelloise seront invités à assister en privé à une répétition générale de la pièce. Cette répétition générale s'intitule : Act One. Assister à cette répétition générale représente une occasion rare de découvrir une œuvre d'art conceptuelle en cours de réalisation. 
Afin de fournir un contexte plus large aux artistes, aux participants et au public de l'Acte 1, une exposition de ce qui a été enregistré par The Red Box jusqu'à présent sera présentée simultanément.
Après le 28 avril, de retour à Melbourne, les artistes continueront à contribuer à l'œuvre par le biais des moyens d'interaction à distance qu'ils ont mis en place pendant leur résidence. Dans le même temps, ils rassembleront le contenu de The Red Box et le configureront sous une forme adaptée à l'archivage, à l'exposition et à la publication.

The RED BOX

The Red Box is een project dat interieurs en stedelijke ruimtes tot leven brengt met een combinatie van installatie, kostuumontwerp en performance.
In de eerste iteratie, in L'Escaut, zal het project de artistieke interesses van Jan van Schaik en Olivia Lennon verkennen, gecombineerd met gevonden en gecureerd materiaal gecreëerd door een internationale culturele samenwerking.
Ze zullen inzendingen van burgers uit de lokale en wereldwijde gemeenschap integreren in de decors, kostuums en scripts voor een experimentele performance in de projectruimte van L'Escaut.
Hun project zal ons meevoeren van het alledaagse leven naar een lucide droomwereld, en dan weer terug - als een hedendaagse hybride van de steen van Sisyphus en de spiegel van Cocteau.
 
The Red Box is gemaakt naar aanleiding van een residentie in de L'Escaut projectruimte in Brussel. Het is een gezamenlijk werk van Olivia Lennon en Jan van Schaik. 
Het werk begrijpt de ruimte als een gevonden voorwerp. Een gevonden object dat architecturale, sociale, culturele en politieke kwaliteiten heeft. En behandelt deze gevonden kwaliteiten als bouwstenen voor het uitbreiden van de materiële filosofieën van hun praktijk.
Er zit een proces aan deze filosofische uitbreiding. Het is een vorm van denken die tijd en ruimte vraagt om met de bouwstenen te spelen, ze opnieuw te rangschikken en te heroverwegen. En het is een vorm van denken die empathie, observatie en de productie van werk in iteratieve vorm vereist. 
De registratie van dit proces is de primaire output van het werk - zoals een vluchtrecorder met een zwarte doos. En het is aan dit concept dat het project zijn naam ontleent: The Red Box.
Het proces draait om een handeling. De act heeft een decor. Er zijn acteurs die personages worden door middel van woorden, geluiden, choreografie, rekwisieten en kostuums.
 
Naast de acteurs zullen ook de huidige leden van L'Escaut worden uitgenodigd om deel te nemen in een vorm die aansluit bij de manier waarop ze al met de studio omgaan. Vormen zoals film, architectuur, performance en culinaire kunsten. En op andere, nog onbekende manieren.
Deze act zal een publiek hebben, dat ingebed zal zijn in de ruimte van de performance.
En er zullen ook deelnemers van over de hele wereld bij betrokken zijn, die via fax, e-mail, morsecode en beeldscherm met de act zullen interageren.
De Red Box documenteert de planning van de act, het schrijven van het script, de uitvinding van de personages, het ontwerp van hun kostuums en de details van hun rekwisieten. De Red Box registreert de tekeningen, afbeeldingen, maquettes en lichtdiagrammen van het decorontwerp. En het zal een choreografische partituur bijhouden van de bewegingen van de agenten en acteurs.
Op zondag 28 april worden leden van de Brusselse kunstgemeenschap uitgenodigd voor een privé viewing van een volledige generale repetitie van de act. Deze generale repetitie is getiteld: Act One. Het bijwonen van deze generale repetitie is een zeldzame kans om een conceptueel kunstwerk in wording te ervaren.
Om een bredere context te bieden aan de performers, deelnemers en het publiek van Act One, zal tegelijkertijd een tentoonstelling worden getoond van wat tot nu toe door The Red Box is opgenomen.
Na 28 april, en terug in Melbourne, zullen de kunstenaars blijven bijdragen aan het werk via de middelen voor interactie op afstand die ze tijdens hun residentie hebben opgezet. Tegelijkertijd zullen ze de inhoud van The Red Box verzamelen en configureren tot een vorm die geschikt is voor archivering, tentoonstelling en publicatie.
